R. H. Middleton, age 33, Private, Captain Johnson’s Company, McRae’s Regiment,* joined for duty and enrolled June 23, 1862 at Springfield by J. E Glenn for 3 years, present at the July 19, 1862 muster,** no other records

* This company subsequently became Company I, 36th Regiment Arkansas Infantry

This regiment was designated at various times as McRae’s Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Glenn’s Regiment Arkansas Infantry and Davie’s Regiment Arkansas Infantry; and at the same time it was also known as 2nd Regiment Trans-Mississippi Infantry, 28th Regiment Arkansas Infantry, and 36th Regiment Arkansas Infantry

** Note: For Company I, the next bi-monthly report would have been for the period August/September, 1862, however this roll is missing from the records. The next surviving muster roll in the records for the company is that for the period March & April, 1863. As his name does not reappear,
he must have been dropped from the roll for some unknown reason. This could have been due to discharge, transfer, desertion, death. He very well may have been killed at the battle of Prairie Grove December 7, 1862. One could also suspect that he and Thomas Middleton, who enlisted at the same time may have deserted. We just do not know from the available records.
