Hello. Great to hear from you.
Captain Joel McClintock was a Union soldier during the Civil War. Apparently he had already
served as a Sgt. on the Mississippi River patrols that the Union ran at that time. So
he was given a promotion and place in charge as a White officer for the 57th which
was the USCT. They were actively engaged in Civil War events of the day, namely the one known
as Ashley Station.
He ended up staying after the war ended, marrying his first wife who may have been a teacher
at the schools set up for the freed Blacks when the war ended. The lady you spoke of would have
been his second wife if I am correct. I just knew there had to be people out there somewhere
with connections to the area who actually knew something.
DeValls Bluff, having been a major river port on the White River,
was the place that the freed slaves went to receive their land grants, etc.
Not sure where you actually live, but if you are anywhere close to DeValls Bluff,
you really need to go visit Debbie Cook who is now the lead on the museum there.
I still truly believe there is a book in all of this. If you do not mind, please send
me your e-mail address to MissLata@sbcglobal.net
So good to hear from you.
