CW soldier Puzzle

Working my way through the 1870 Johnson Co., Arkansas Census.

Came across Maloney Mathews b. 1839 in Tennessee and married to Nancy. Daughter named Missouri b. 1860 in Arkansas et al.

No luck on Maloney Mathews on any other Census or Ancestry sites.
So I researched the daughter, Missouri, and found her, with her father Alcany B. Mathews (born 1839 in Tennessee) and his wife Nancy on the 1880 Carroll Co., AR Census.

Quick search found his CSR in Company E, 3rd Arkansas Infantry.
Only card showed him paroled at Springfield, MO Jan 1863.
Okay, obviously in error bc the regiment was in Virginia.
Must be some other unit.

Striking out until I find the pension record of his widow Nancy, filed from Carroll Co., Arkansas, listing service in Company A, Harrell's Battalion (17th Arkansas Cavalry Battalion).
Sure enough, there is a card for Alcany Matthis of that company who enlisted 17 Mar 1863 in Carroll County.

So my puzzle is, in which unit would he have served in order to be paroled 2 months prior to his enlistment in the 17th Ark Cavalry Battalion?
