Re: Interpretation of 1863 desertions

Well, quite a few of Col Wm A. Crawford's men are listed as deserters but it is not accurate as to the actual event. As the CS army advanced to the rear down the Military Rd it ran smack dab through the middle of Saline Co. Many men of Co B and G (both Saline County men) are listed as deserting on the retreat from Little Rock, however, many return. With the Yankees coming along the road, they undoubtedly went to see after their families, remove them somewhere else etc. eventually returning to their commands. I can't speak for others necessarily, but I am sure many were quite put out with the defeat and retreat.
