THere was a 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union) raised there in central Alabama. I had relatives in it that lived Fayette County and Walker County just west from Birmingham. It was a huge regiment of "Tories" as they were referred to. Mine then came to Stone County Arkansas in the 1870's.
