Speculation here, But the Camden Longview road was a major communication route between Camden and Gaines Landing. Longview was an important crossing point of the Saline River as well as a communication point south into Louisiana. One of the things that was missed in Greathouse's raid on Longview 3/29/64 was a steamboat loaded with corn from the south.

Most of the prisoners taken at Longview were from John C. Wrights Cavalry Brigade which had just passed through heading north and would be involved in the Battle of Mt. Elba the next day at Mt. Elba Ferry on the Saline River against Greathouse and the rest of Powell Clayton Command at that place.

These men were from Co "D" of the 26th of Bradley Co. mainly from and area which is now Cleveland Co. Arkansas. I would say that these men are a detachment under Lt. Patterson sent back into the area to gather up new enlistee for the regiment or deserters.
