There was a detachment of Federal cavalry stationed at Evening Shade for a few months after the surrender, but there's no record that they were involved in any skirmishes during this period.

My family is from Sharp County. Our family oral traditions (if they can be relied on) maintain that bushwhackers were active in the area for a year or so after the war. My grandfather told me some hair-raising stories that his father had told him about the depredations they committed. The sheriff deputized a number of men who tracked down and killed the bushwhackers. That, at least, is the tale that is told.

One of the customs I grew up with dictated that you always shouted from the road before coming on to a neighbor's property. According to my grandpa, this custom grew out of the bushwhacker days, when folks always kept a loaded rifle by the door.
