You get the impression from the article that she was an "experienced" dipper. But you are correct. Going to sleep with anything in your mouth, let alone tobacco, is never a good thing to do. The use of Tobacco in the south was widespread and in many forms during that period, including the chewing of the green leaves. Which if you know anything about tobacco I am told it taste terrible.
