For what it may be worth to the current thread-I seem to recall that in May 1862 Gov. Rector "called all men to turn out for state service" and those that did not would be conscripted. Given that choice many men enlisted instead of being forced to serve. Rector also promised that they would not be transferred to the Confederacy or be forced to serve outside the state. Doyle how many men were in Sulphur Springs at this time (May-June 1862)?
