There is also an opposite phenomenon- acoustic shadowing. Acoustic shadowing is where commanders on the ground of the battle cannot hear the guns, due to atmospheric conditions, or the presence of physical barriers. It occurred during the battles of Gettysburg, Seven Pines, Iuka, Fort Donelson, Five Forks, Perryville, and Chancellorsville.
