Mathew - There are several William Smith's listed in the 17th Ala. Records for one Wm. B. Smith of Company A do not record his enlistment. Confederate records of casualties at the Battle of Shiloh indicate that he was captured by the Union army on April 7, 1862. Union POW records indicate that he was taken to Camp Douglas, outside of Chicago. There he was admitted to the prison hospital on May 1, and died either on June 8 (hospital record) or June 10 (prison record).
