Re: Thomas Baggett 59th Alabama Inf. Co.B.

There are some unsubstantiated rumors that Thomas Baggett suffered a recurrence of his wounds after being furloughed and was somehow captured by Union soldiers. He was then sent to St.Louis USA General Hospital,New Orleans,La. to recuperate. The rest is hazy because it was said he escaped from there one night (Jan.15,1865)and might have gone back to Alabama. There also is a story that the Union authorities listed him as a POW who took the loyalty oath in their hospital and then deserted. I am still trying to figure that story out. I am grateful for the information you gave me,especially that he swore the oath of loyalty on May 27,1865 at Montgomery since that is where the 59th. Ala.Regiment originated and, maybe, he went back to his unit just before the end of war. It's a big mystery to what he might have done and I hope to solve it someday. Thank you. Charles.
