I always thought that when a confederate soldier was captured/surrendered he signed a loyalty oath at the time he was paroled. I understand now that it depended on the circumstances at the time. Some POW'S swore oaths in order to be paroled during the war,like at Vicksburg. Some, like Thomas Baggett, was paroled until he could be officially exchanged as a prisoner of war at the end.
