UPDATE:: Boy, old Patrick is becoming more and more famous. Thanks to Art Green, and Rick Bryant, who tracked him down, I have many pages about his journey from the infantry, to the cavalry to the navy. I even found him listed, on page 341, in "Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion." I only found his name, no ship or rank, so I've written to the National Archives to see if they can send me the information.
Anyway, I'll be happy to send a donation to help this great web board, but through the TETRA web-site, I can't figure out how to do it. If the webmaster wants to tell me, fine. It would be easier to give Rick his favorite bourbon, if I just knew where to send it.
