Here is an intriguing possibility: According to the muster roll for Company H for the period May 30 - June 30, 1861, Record of Events, the company received marching orders on May 18, 1861,to proceed from Mobile to Richmond. They left Mobile on May 30, and were mustered into Confederate service at Richmond on June 8, 1861. On June 9, 1861, a man named Patrick Ray enlisted in Richmond as a private in Co. A, 10th Virginia Cavalry. His records with that company are fairly complete. On June 18, 1864, he transferred from the army to the navy. On account of that transfer, a descriptive list and account of pay and clothing was drawn up for him. It says that he is age 30, has blue eyes, dark hair, florid complexion, and that he is 5' 10". That he was born in Buffalo, NY, and that by occupation is an engineer. Several coincidences. You can decide how much to read between these lines.
