I have recently come across a letter that lists William Jasper Matthews serving in the Civil War. This is the information:

"Jasper Mathews stumped Jackson County, Alabama, in opposition to secession, but when the state went out of the Union, he made up a company which was called Company J (?). He was very proud of Company J (?). He married Mary Anderson."

The handwriting looks like it is Company J, but I cannot find any records.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
