It always helps to know the story. William P. Kirby served in Hardaway's/Hurt's Battery. Batteries often had names, such as the Eufaula Light Artillery, but were often known by their captain's name. For instance, the Eufaula Light Artillery was called Clark's, Mctyer's and Oliver's Battery at different times. I have access to the service records and could help if you have an interest there. The battery had just returned from Gettysburg PA at that time, and operated with two of the Army of Northern Virginia's long-range rifled guns, 12-lb. Whitworth rifles that had come through th blockade from England.
