John W. McLendon - CSA Soldier?
Thu Jul 26 08:05:42 2001

I am hoping someone can help me solve a mystery. I have been told my ggrandfather, John W. McLendon, fought at Shiloh for the Confederacy, was wounded in action and died later in Mobile from gangrene of those wounds. He is supposedly buried in Mobile.

I know very little about John W. McLendon so I am really struggling with this. Here is what I do know: John W. McLendon married Mary S. Buckalou in Mobile, Mobile Co., AL on 17 Jan 1861. They had one known son. I know that Mary had remarried by Aug of 1866.

There is a grave site in Magnolia Cemetery, Confederate Rest Section for J. McLendon, d. 19 Jul 1862.

Now, my questions...since the Battle of Shiloh was fought in Apr of 1862, is it possible for someone to have died five months later from gangrene of wounds received in April? Can anyone give me a starting point or suggestions for researching the J. McLendon in Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile? Is there some way to research the soldiers who were wounded at Shiloh?

I am totally out of my league here. Help!
