Mike Deason
John Columbus Deason, 44th AL to ???

Ok, here's one.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, John Columbus Deason, enlisted March 15, 1862 at Scottsville, Bibb Co., AL as a memeber of the company that would become "The Scottsville Guards" (Co. B, 44th Al.) The last information I have concerning his service with the 44th is from a descriptive roll signed and certified by Capt. Joab Goodson (the roll is dated January 3, 1865; Goodson would be killed within the next two weeks, his exact date of death still unknown.) On the descriptive roll it is noted he was dues wages as a 5th Sgt from November 1, 1864.

According to a short, post-war biography he wrote, he was granted a furlough of 30 days "about the first of January 1865." During the furlough, he travelled from Petersburg back to Scottsville. He then states, "I stayed at home awhile and then went off to the Calvary up in North Alabama and stayed with them until the war was about over."

At this point, I'm lost. I cannot seem to find what unit he may have joined. The closest fit I've found is a John C. Deason, Co. C, 10th Texas Calvary. Maybe someone else may have more information.

Also, how common was it for a man to go on furlough from one unit and join up with another unit?

Regards,

Mike
