Mike...

You might try looking at the 9th Alabama Cavalry- they had apparently been in Northern Alabama prior to March, 1865. I have a letter from my gr-gr-uncle (who served in the 9th) who wrote from Charlotte, NC on March 18th that they had left Somerville, AL and had slowly made their way to Charlotte, via Montgomery, Columbus, Macon, and Milledgeville, GA. He was writing to his father about being in Limestone County and crossing the Tennessee River for Somerville as they left. He was also apologozing to his father for unintentionally hurting him, so I think he failed to stop by to see him while he was passing through.

I know several soldiers from the 9th Alabama Regiment came home from Petersburg during January and never made it back- some were trying to get into local cavalry units, but they didn't mention which ones. I don't have a roster for the 9th Cavalry and the name doesn't ring a bell.

I hope this helps...good luck

John
