You probably won't find a military record on him in a cavalry unit. First, cavalry units didn't keep great records and next, at that time of the war few records were kept. This was reasonably common, esp. given the difficulties of finding one's way through Sherman's troops in the Carolinas with all the rail lines torn up as they were. He probably joined one of Roddey's regiments and carried a standard infantry rifled musket, just like most of them. Many members of cavalry units might serve for most of the war and still not have any record of service.
