My gg-grandfather, Benjamin White Clifton of Bibb County enlisted as a Private detailed to work in a cotton factory on (1st Cot.)? 1861 at Scottsville, Ala. He recieved an exemption from military service 1861-1865 as an employee of the Scottsville Manufacturing Company in Bibb County. He served in this capacity (as well as on the muster roll for the Bibb Home Guards) until Wilson's raid burned the factory on 2 Apr 1865. Those damn Yankees robbed this man of his watch and all of his clothing! My question is...if he was enlisted with rank (Private), was he actually a Confederate Soldier and if so, would this enlistment have been in the Home Guard or some other unit or organization? Where would I look for further records? This info is from the Confederate Service Records at the ADA&H.
