Alan J. PittsRe: ExemptionWed Mar 21 07:23:31 2001 The title from the archives is misleading; someone meant to indicate wartime exemptions when they wrote '1861-1865'. Obviously 1861 doesn't apply. If I remember, First Class Militia included men who would've been eligible for Confederate service based on age but held some legal exemption. Home guard membership would've placed him in the volunteer militia category. We had a discussion of that topic on the board a few weeks ago.This is great information to have!
