Frank Patterson4th Alabama CavalrySat Mar 17 23:13:51 2001 Hello everyone,I live in Arizona and am originally from Indiana. However, my mom is from Huntsville, Alabama and I have recently begun to look into the history of the "southern branch" of my family. In this process I got lucky and discovered that a distant kinsman had already done a lot of work on one branch of the family. I was proud to discover that at least one member of my family fought for the Confederacy. My GGG grandpa apparently fought with the 4th Alabama Cavalry. This is what my cousin discovered according to pension records. I also crosschecked this information on the list of Madison Country recipients of the Southern Cross of Honor. The good ladies of the DCV had my GGG grandpa's unit listed as Co. K 4th Alabama Cavalry. My cousin says he fought with "Capt. Sam Sanford's Company" of the 4th Alabama Cavalry. Are these the same unit? I am confused because none of the online rosters name a Capt. Sam Sanford. Actually, they do not list my GGG grandpa either, although, as I said, he appears in other records as having served. My relative's name was Private George Mack (MacDonald) Zion Gibson (also spelled Gipson). He apprently joined this unit from Madison County Alabama at the age of 13. I would sincerely appreciate any information about this unit that anyone might be able to share. Thanks!FrankCo. K 4th Al Cav.
