Frank Patterson
4th Alabama Cavalry or Infantry?

I'd like to thank you all for the replies I have received. I received a message from my cousin today. I had asked her for further clarification on her research. I will post her response below in the hopes that someone here with more knowledge of these matters can make sense of this for me. Here is what she wrote:

"Your information on G.M. Gipson, Ryland Al. Pvt. Co. K 4th Alabama Cavalry is correct. Captian Sam Sanford's Company. Captian Sam Sanford "recruited Gipson and served others but not enough to make a company; when they reached the regiments some of them joined Gurley's company
and Gipson and others joined Whitmane Co. K" (This came off the copy of the paper 'Census or Enumeration of Confederate Soldiers Residing in Alabama, 1907' I have on G.M. Gipson). It can be found in the Huntsville Public Library - Heritage Room or the Madison County Court House. According to some pages I copied out of a book by Don Gipson ... G.M. Gipson left Huntsville as a member of the Madison Rifles
where his unit traveled to Dalton, Ga. There they met up with the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment. This unit was in the end among the shattered remnants of Lee's armies during the final surrender at Appomattox.I can send you a copy if you like."

Now I am more consused than ever. It almost sounds like George Mack Zion Gipson fought with two different units at different times. Can anyone make sense out of this? In the meantime I will ask my cousin for a copy of her information.

Thanks again to everyone.

Frank
