Found him....

There's an entry with the 34th Ala. records showing that J. W. Hughes of Co. "B" was paroled at Talladega Ala. on May 17, 1865. There's also a Chesley Hughes who served with the same company. It's very difficult to distinguish between the letters 'J' and 'I'; the letters 'M' and 'W' are easier to tell apart, but are still often confused. I believe the copyist misread "I. M." for "J. W."

You provided much useful information, but it would also be helpful to know where this man lived in 1860. I noticed an entry for J. M. HUges in Co. "G", 28th Texas Cavalry. Is this the unit cited on the pension application you mentioned? What information appears on the application? Family members usually tried their best to get that part right, because if the name didn't appear on the service records of the unit cited in the application, no pension would be forthcoming from the state. There may be some possibility that he served with both the Texas and Alabama units; after all there's only end-of-the-war data on you ancestor filed with the 34th Alabama. We still don;t know what he was doing earlier.
