Mitchell's Regiment
Mon Mar 5 13:31:16 2001

Julius C. B. Mitchell served briefly as Lt.Col. of the 13th Alabama, then was elected Colonel of the 34th Alabama. The 34th was often called Mitchell's Regiment. Your ancestor served in Co. "A" of this regiment, organized under Capt. Thomas J. Mitchell at Montgomery, Ala., Mar. 7, 1862.

For what it's worth, the 34th Alabama served in a brigade led by Arthur M. Manigault of South Carolina. Manigault's memoirs were recently published and would be the best possible source on the service of your ancestor's regiment during the war. Available at $14.95, here's a bookseller's listing:

"A Carolinian Goes to War: The Civil War Narrative of Arthur Middleton Manigault, Brigadier General, C.S.A., Tower, R. Lockwood, ed. Manigault's memoir provides us a brilliant account of the major campaigns of the western front, from the debacle immediately following Shiloh to the last gasp at Franklin and Nashville. (1983), 344pp., softbound.
