Gracie's Brigade - Going East
Thu Feb 15 08:46:28 2001

After the battle of Knoxville, TN in Nov.-Dec. of '64, Gracie's Brigade (41st, 43rd, 59th and 60th Alabama Inf. Regt.'s) as a part of Longstreet's command marched east and joined the ANV for the balance of the war.

I have always presumed that this was not by design, but was due to the loss at Knoxville and their inability to return to the Army of Tennessee after the Confederate loss at Chattanooga.

Is this the case or did Lee ask for the reinforcement of his army by Gracie's Alabaman's and B.R. Johnson's Tennesseeans?

Jim
