Terrific Book! but...

I've always felt that the Bermuda Hundred Campaign and Beauregard's initial defense of Petersburg deserve more attention as pivotal to the continuation of the Confederacy and holding Richmond.

I have an ancestor who was a member of the 17th Tennessee Infantry and I've always wondered if Johnson's and Gracie's brigades remained in Virginia due to a plan or if circumstances, such as, the Bermuda Hundred campaign and th move against Petersburg interfered with them being returned to the Army of Tennessee.

I'm not aware of any communication by Johnston asking for the return of these men or of Lee stating the he had asked for them or required them to stay. It seems circumstances, more than anything else, resulted in them joining the ANV.

Do you have any other information?

Jim
