Alan J. Pitts
B - 5th Cavalry

The index shows the name as Allen S. Estes, but the POW death record says Allen T. Estes. The original Company "B" of Patterson's 5th Alabama Cavalry was recruited in Fayette County. However, many of the companies in Patterson's regiment were traded for companies originally recruited for Pickett's 10th Alabama. I don't know if this is the case for Company "B". If so, it could explain why a man like Estes from Blount County would be in this company.

At any rate, Estes was captured near Pond Spring (present-day Wheeler), Ala. on December 29, 1864. General Roddey's command had occupied Huntsville during Hood' Tennessee campaign, but had been forced southwest across the river. The defeat at Pond Spring was one of several humiliating losses suffered by Roddey at the hands of a smaller Federal cavalry command.

If anyone is familiar with the exchanges that took place between the 5th and 10th Alabama in October of 1864, please respond.
