The only way back out to the valley they came up was the way they came in. They would have to go back down the road intact without leaving the right or left behind, of course. Not sure what you mean exactly, (center fall back hoping to draw the attack into that area.)although the option you picked seems to be the safest and easiest, but without as much potential for gain.

It was a one shot high stakes gamble by it's very nature. (Sort of like high and low risk investments. The more you risk the more you gain and vice versa.)

There was no real pressing need for Meade to be too aggressive. His role was to block the invasion and put pressure on the invader.

Lee could not afford to mark time. It was all he could do to arrange and muster the invasion originally. It compelled him to attack, be attacked or go home.

That just realistically left the first two options, only. Putting it in the hands of Meade does not seem to be very viable then or now, in my opinion.
