:Tim, It's called many things sucker punch, crossfire, organized retreat. Most commanders like to butcher their enemies even today. Remember Gulf War. Union officers being no different, I think they would have came after a "wounded" animal. After two days any gain less than total victory would have been a waste. I agree on some of your points, however I would have saved my troops for another day. It was Jeff Davis job to handle the political war, Lee's to win battles.
