Rich:

I've pulled records on George (C.) Rodgers or Rogers for you. Send me your address and I'll drop the copies in the mail to you.

Briefly, according to the records, Rodgers was enlisted March 15, 1861 at Pineville, Alabama by Giles Goode in old Company D, which became new Company C of the 5th Regiment. Oddly, Goode was Captain of the Monroe County Company and Pineville is in that county near Beatrice, not too far from Camden. That's a long was from Noxubee County, Mississippi. Since you have info showing enlistment in Pickens County, smack up against the Alabama/Mississippi border, I consider this info suspect. There are loads of other Rodgers/Rogers in Co. C, but I didn't check their places of enlistment, and I still believe new Co. C is a Pickens County company.

Regimental returns for Oct. of 1862 and for March and April of 1863 list him detailed as a beef driver and butcher. Returns in 1864 list him as "Absent, Prisoner since July 15/64." Union prisoner rolls reflect he was captured by General Hunters forces "near Harpers Ferry" or "Loudon County, Virginia" on July 16.

Rodgers was sent to the Old Capital Prison in D.C., then on to Elmira, N.Y., which he entered July 25, 1864. He died a guest of the munificent central government in that garden spot on February 13, 1865. Cause of death, Variola. He is buried in grave no. 2090.

Hope this helps.
