This is the only record I find of him. Would you know if he had a middle initial which might help locate him for possible further service?

James Whetzel, 38 year old Farmer, Company A, 14th Virginia Militia, enlisted September 17, 1861 at Wardensville, Hardy County, Va. by Capt. Dinges for 6 months, believe present at Winchester on December 12, 1861, no further records

Morning Report, 14th Regiment Virginia Militia, January 6, 1862, stationed at Moorsfield, Hardy County, Va.
Record of Events
This Regiment came out under the Proclamation of the Governor of Va. Marched to the Rendezvous appointed from thence to the place ordered and there remained until dismissed and no officers appeared to muster it into service. It is now in the field under the order of Brig. Genl Boggs, was mustered into service on the 12th of Dec. for 6 months from the 17th of Sept. 1861 and mustered for pay on the 31st of Dec. yet not a dollar has been paid to officers or privates and many of them are actually suffering for want of it for their families.
