Pre-war, or very early war photo. Many of the existing militia units were wearing blue uniforms, same as the "regular" army did. Not all Militia units wore grey has it had been the national habit and forte, regardless of what state it was, North or South. You had a few Southern units wearing blue, also some Northern militia units still wearing grey even into the first several months of the war.

Perhaps modeling their new and old uniforms. Both are wearing grey trousers. The sky-blue kersey trousers didn't come about till a little later. US had dark blue trousers as standard issue prior to and at the beginning of the war. The grey shell jacket shown was a popular uniform pattern style, particularly with Virginia troops. This pattern go's back at least into the late 1850's with many Va Militia units as their secondary fatigue jacket. This same black trimmed pattern later was adopted by the Richmond Depot in their 1861 early-mid 1862 issues. Later historical ID classified and referred to as the Richmond Depot Type-I jacket.
