Location of Army of the Valley after Ceder Creek

I have a question. I am trying to locate where someone who was in Staunton, VA on Oct. 20, 1864 would have found the 38th GA Infantry after the Battle of Cedar Creek, VA (Oct. 19, 1864). This would have been Gen. C.A. Evans's Brigade, J.B. Gordon's Division, Jubal Earley's Army of the Valley.
I am trying to follow a Virginia officer, on horse back, that left the area of North Georgia/Chattanooga, TN on or about Oct. 6, 1864 and was in Staunton, VA on Oct.20, 1864. (distance today of 445 miles). Staunton was still in Confederate hands as the officer requisitioned Oats for his horse on 10/20/64. He was an Assistant Surgeon being transferred from the Army of Tennessee to The Army of Northern Virginia, 38th GA Infantry. I guess the question is, where was Gordon's Division of what remained of Jubal Early's command after the defeat at Cedar Creek/Belle Grove
