This is the only J/James A. Brooks found in a Tennessee Confederate Unit.
Although a resident of Maury County, he enlisted in Claiborne County where he may have been working or visiting kin at the time.
Many Confederate soldiers who deserted prior to Appomattox, upon subscribing to the Oath of Allegiance to the U. S. and paroled, were directed to proceed and remain north of the Ohio River.
James A. Brooks, Private, Company C*, 29th Regiment Tennessee Infantry, enlisted August 1, 1861 at Cumberland, Gap by Col. F. M. Walker for 12 months, swore allegiance to the United States at Nashville, Tenn., February 3, 1865, resident of Murray [sic] County, Tenn., fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5’ 8”, deserted November 30, 1864, no family
