I am trying to find out exactly what Company A., 39th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry did? I have been doing research for the last year and it is difficult to find out any information on the internet.

My great, great, great Grandfather James W. Riley was a Private in this Battalion and his obituary in 1911 listed him as a courier. We have his pistol, holster, saddle bag and horse collar.

Can anyone point me to exactly where I can find information specific to Company A in this Battalion? Were they attached to the Headquarters of the Army of Northern Virgnia? What battles were they engaged in? It is hard to get to the Library of Virginia in Richmond when I only get home once a year from New York.

Any information would be appreciated.
