The Federals belonged to the 1st New York Cavalry - a detail of 31 men under a Captain Jones. The Official Reports note that General Imboden wrote a letter to General Lee on the morning of 30 June describing the skirmish, to which Lee attributed the capture of Captain Ervin and much of his company to "want of proper caution on his [Ervin's] part." The CSRs show 1 man killed and 22 captured from Capt. Ervin's Co. G, 18th Virginia Cavalry [see Roger U. DeLauter, Jr.'s book on the 18th Virginia Cavalry, part of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series]. The only description that I have found on the skirmish is by William H. Beach, Adjutant of the 1st New York Cavalry, in The National Tribune of 27 September 1923. In this account a merchant of the town named J. W. Greathead describes the encounter in some detail; he afterwards counted 32 Confederate prisoners and 34 horses in town. Later the same afternoon several Confederate companies moved into the town from different directions, but the Federals were gone. Another skirmish took place near there on 2 July.
