I was fascinated by the Hatfield / McCoy series. Have since been looking up service records of the feud's prominent folks. Found Union soldier, Harmon McCoy whose murder probably started the whole thing. He served in the 45th Ky. Sure enough, his last file card is dated Dec.64. He was killed Jan.65. Most were in the rebel 45th Va. Battalion. I believe most of them eventually deserted, came home, and fought who they wanted to, when they wanted to ! What about " Bad " Jim Vance? Wasn't his middle name Hatfield ? ( uncle to Devil Anse ? ) Found a James H. Vance in the 7th Va. Cavalry. Only 4 file cards. Could that be him ???? Here in east Tennessee I'm about 100 miles " as the crow flies " from where all this mess took place lol !!! If Randall McCoy spent time at Camp Douglass his head probably was messed up when he got home ! Maybe the Northern equivalent to Andersonville ?
