His service record file in M331 records promotion to Colonel October 8, 1863. I didn't check all his cards and did not see
a promotion to BGen.

The photo I mentioned before show him in the uniform of a Major. This same photo is found in Vol. 4 of Battles and Leaders,
page 10, with the caption, Colonel D. B. Harris, C. S. A.

Both in Battles and Leaders and Vol. 4 of Lee's Lieutenants, he is listed in the indexes as Colonel.

He died of Yellow Fever October 10, 1864 at Summerville, SC.

Boatner's Civil War Dictionary provides us with: "Although Heitman and Cullum list him as a general officer, and although he
deserved to be one, he died as a Col."
