Consulting the Official Records, the number paroled at Appomattox for this brigade was 61 officers and 772 men. The last inspection report for this brigade, dated Feb. 28, 1865, listed 63 officers and 1,021 men pfd; aggregate present, 1,539. Of course these numbers include dismounted officers and men of the brigade, who had been assembled as an ad hoc battalion.

Considering the hard fighting done by Gary's Brigade during the Appomattox Campaign and the number (perhaps 150, based on Lee Sturkey's estimate) that escaped from the column before the surrender, losses much have been much lower than I would have guessed.

Far from "destroyed".
