McDonald mentioned Payne sending Fitzhugh and 20 riders ahead of the main body to capture the New Creek pickets. He did not mention his first name in the text, but did in the index. In his article about Rosser's Raid for the WV History Magazine, the late-Fritz Haselberger had identified him as F. Fitzhugh.
