Blandford Cemetery has nearly 30,000 Confederates Buried there... of these only about 3,700 are actually identified. Majority of those that were killed in action... died on the field... hastily buried on the field and later moved to Blandford... are mostly all unidentified... Because a given persons name doesn't show up on the burial register... does not confirm he isn't there... Just that if he is he is most likely amongst the majority.... unidentified.

During the siege there was a steady and constant flow of killed/dead being brought in daily... typically by the wagon loads at a time... Whatever identification the respective body may originally have had... most did not survive.. Those that were buried on the field in hasty shallow graves... many in mass graves... might have had a simple board of the persons name unit... by the time post war these were gathered up and transferred also to Blandford.... whatever identification existed usually had rotted away... contractors were paid a fee per body recovered... usually piled up in wagons.... remember there were thousands of these scattered all around the battlefield....

There might be a remote chance that his body was sent home... but taken into consideration the situation existing at the time around Petersburg... the difficulty it would be to arrange such... and what is known that happened to many thousands of other dead from that campaign... the likelihood is quite low that he was shipped out.... especially that of an enlisted private in the ranks... Many of the Federal battlefield dead from that campaign ended up unidentified as well for the same reasons...

It was noted in the company muster rolls "killed in the trenches"... that's probably all the information that exists about it.... many didn't have that much noted....
