Re: My ancestor is overlooked for the 8th Va. Cava

Co.G and Co.I.. probably same person... another letter combo frequently misidentified...
Company-I was actually from Kanawha County...

Using pens and quills in those days with the victorian era "round hand" style of script writing was at times difficult to interpret/read in 1901 as it is now... Unfortunately they didnt "print" anything in handwriting back in those days...lol...

Ok according to these cards this individual was actually the 1st Sgt of the company that would have been his normal rank and assignment... and only served as "Acting" Ord Sgt for the regiment.... So yes while he was detached doing this he would have normally signed anything as the Ord Sgt... even though it would have been more proper for him to have signed it as "Acting Ord Sgt". So yes on the cards whereas he was serving in that capacity it would indicate him as being the Ord Sgt even though it was only a temporary assignment... not actually a promotion in kind.. Therefore also he would not have had or worn any stars at all...

"detached service" means he was detailed to do things away from the company or away from his usual duties. (isnt the same as having leave or furlough) As acting ord sgt he may have been sent off to pick up arms, equipment or ammunition etc. So he would get commutation pay to cover his travel expenses, which is what most of the vouchers indicate. Unfortnately signatures on vouchers could be someone from Ord Dept, Qm Dept, a brigade or divisional adjutant, so many times they are difficult to use to narrow anything down with... Same with enlistments.. it could be some officer with another unit, a military district or anyone that just happened to be there at a given place on temporary recruitment service.
