Lorena’s letter, while covering the period in the fall of 1862, was dated March 29. This means it was dated and added to after the events occurred but before she posted it. Her father’s furlough ended March 29th and I believe he took the letter to post when he left. It was received by her Aunt Lurinda on June 19, 1863.

A son William Louis was born in November of 1863 to the Browns.

Document in file that indicates JW Brown was on leave:
From Jan. 24 to Feb. 4: For commutation of rations for self whilst on detached service for ten days from 24th Jan 1863 to 4rth Feb 1863 at 75 cents per day. $7.52

From Feb. 20 to March 29, 1863: For commutation rations whilst on furlough for 37 days from 20th Feb up to 29th March 1863 at 75 cents per day. $27.75

(typed) I certify the above account is correct; that the commutation was made by my order and was necessary for the public service it being impracticable to take rations in kind. Signed in handwriting JM (?can’t read it) Col., 8th Va Cavalry.

(Written) Received at Camp Radford May 7th 1863 from AJ Tyens (?) Cap (can’t make out the rest)

Circumstantial evidence, I know. But I think it is also circumstantial that this is Joseph William.
