There is one card belonging to a J M Brown, a private with company G, in with this bunch. That I think is clearly a misfile.

JW is also a 1rst sergeant with company I, but I think gets the promotion to ordnance sgt.

Commutations while sick at Monroe from Feb. 10-March 4 . Twenty two days, 1862.
1sgt, Co I, 8th Va. Cavalry. There is a card that states JW was in the hospital. Was there a hospital at Monroe? The Joshua Brown family was still in Paint Creek at this time.

Then, a voucher for contingencies, 1rst quarter 1862. For $16.00 from 1rst Sgt. JW Brown, Company I, 8th Va Cavalry.

Finally, October 31, 1862: Commutations of rations for myself for 68 days commencing 25th Aug, 1862 and ending Oct. 31, 1862 at 30 cents per day whilst acting as ordnance sget. 8th Va. Cavalry. Captain reviewing was A J Tynes (?) or lynes or something like that. I can’t read the okaying signature. This was signed JW Brown ordnance sgt. So, he got a promotion. (I really think those were the stars Lorena saw her mother sewing on. No different or glittery. Just stars which to a twelve year old would be impressive.)
