Pvt. T. Chaffin was in Company C, 9th Texas Cavalry Regiment. If your Chaffin was over 50 he was probably discharged in May of 1862 when the Army was reorganized. All soldiers over 42 and under 18 were sent home. There are several sites to look at the War history of the 9th, such as mine below. You could also read Grisscom's Diary, which details the 9th role in the war. If he was 30 and made it through the war, he had an unbelievable history. You might look at Notebook.com and find the Civil war Records, Texas, 9th, and Chaffin. This will show you his complete military record and the summary of the 9th.

This Talifaro B. Chaffin (b-1812) is mentioned several times in land transactions with my Bourlands plus he was offically in an 1838 Texas militia with Bourland, but he is not listed in any other militia, which does not mean he did not serve. Many men, esp. older men, served unofficially in the home guard.

I think he probably lied about his age. In my militia listings, I have several men over age 60.

The family states that other names that he used were Toliver, Oliver, T.B., D.B., and Talifarreo.
