Alan, I think maybe you intended to say Yanks preferred to name battles after nearest towns while the Rebs mostly named them by location such as streams and rivers.

There were, of course, many exceptions to this rule such as the battle, here in MO near Springfield, which the Yanks called "Wilson Creek" and the Rebs called Oak Hills".
