Thanks for the news about Soules (Sp?) being English. Duff's 33rd Texas Cavalry was composed of Anglos and Hispanics so this is a big help. BTW, Colonel Duff was from Scotland and is buried in Scotland. Can you tell where (William) Soules lived in Texas prior to enlistment? The Texas State Archives has the muster rolls of some of the original companies which formed the 33rd Texas Cavalry, so if you have a county it will be very helpful in finding the date of enlistment.

Alex Sweet (A Canadian) served as a private in the 33rd Texas Cavalry. Alex Sweet later wrote HIGHLY Satirical newspaper accounts of his life in Texas, some of which included his activities in Company A, 33rd Texas Cavalry, so if you are interested check this book which is available via inter-library loan or via book sellers like Amazon.com. I did not find Soules mentioned in this 672-page, unindexed book, but you could get a satirized flavor for Soules' service.
